Yılankale was built in the 12th century by King Leo I of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, on a steep hill commanding both the Ceyhan plain and the historic Silk Road. Abandoned in the 14th century, the castle later took its present name; in the 17th century the traveller Evliya Çelebi referred to it as 'Şahmaran Kalesi'. Its walls and tower remains still stand on the hilltop.
