Construction of the Grand Mosque began in 1509 under Ramazanoğlu Halil Bey and was completed in 1541 by his son Piri Mehmet Paşa. The building carries Seljuk and Mamluk architectural styles, its walls decorated with black-and-white marble, and its 16th-century tiles are well known. It remained Adana's largest mosque until the Sabancı Central Mosque opened.
