The Aydıntepe Underground City, 25 km from central Bayburt, was discovered by chance in 1988 during construction of a hotel. Rooms, halls and water wells carved into volcanic tuff without any building material are linked by 1 km of narrow corridors. Graves above it and figures on its walls point to it being carved in the late Roman or early Byzantine period.
