Mutki, south-west of Bitlis's centre, lies on hilly terrain. Turkish beyliks that settled the area after the 1071 Battle of Manzikert came under Ottoman rule following the 1514 Battle of Çaldıran. It was occupied by Russian and Armenian forces during the First World War and liberated on 6 April 1916.
