The scholar Akşemseddin, tutor to Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, was buried in this tomb after his death in 1459; the tomb itself was built on the sultan's order in 1464. The hexagonal, domed tomb of cut stone holds the sarcophagi of Akşemseddin and his sons; his walnut sarcophagus, carved with relief inscriptions, is an example of Ottoman woodwork.
