Korgun lies in north-western Çankırı, with the provincial centre to its east, Ilgaz to its north, Kurşunlu to its west and Eldivan and Şabanözü to its south. During his 1925 hat-reform journey to Kastamonu, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk passed through here; the district takes its name from the Kargın tribe of the Oğuz confederation. It was raised from a subdistrict to a district in 1990.
