Standing on a rocky hill in the city centre, the building was built as a hospital (şifahane) in 1235 by Atabey Cemaleddin Ferruh, with a theological school (darülhadis) added in front of it in 1242-1243. It is considered the most important surviving Seljuk-era building in Çankırı.
