Tekman, in southern Erzurum, lies 151 km from the provincial centre; the Aras River, one of Turkey's important waterways, rises within the district. Formerly known by the Armenian name Tatos, the settlement came under Ottoman administration in 1517 and was a village attached to Hınıs until it became a district in 1946.
