Meryem Ana Monastery, in Sarıyer village 11 km east of Şebinkarahisar, dates from the Byzantine period. Heavily damaged over time, the remains seen today are from its complete 19th-century rebuilding. Built into a large hollow in a sheer cliff, it recalls Sümela Monastery in Trabzon and is thought to have been inspired by it.
