Founded in 1914 in the soup-kitchen wing of the Süleymaniye complex as the Evkaf-ı İslamiye Museum, it moved in 1983 to its present home in the İbrahim Pasha Palace. Among its roughly forty thousand objects is the "Şam Evrakları" collection of early Islamic-period Koran pages, rescued from a fire in Damascus in 1907.
