Maltepe, on İstanbul's Asian side, has about 7 kilometres of Marmara Sea coastline and is bordered by Kadıköy, Kartal, Sancaktepe and Ataşehir. It was a small coastal village in Byzantine times and served as an army encampment area under the Ottomans; Kayışdağı is the district's highest point.
