Construction began in 2013 and the mosque opened in 2019; with a capacity of 63,000 it is the largest mosque built in the Republican era. Four of its six minarets are 107 metres tall and two are 90 metres. Its complex also includes a museum, a library and a conference hall, and its position on Çamlıca Hill gives it a commanding view over much of the city.
