Çandarlı Castle was built by Genoese knights on the site of the ancient city of Pitane and is one of Türkiye's best-preserved castles. In the 13th-14th century the grand vizier Çandarlı Halil Paşa had it rebuilt to withstand cannon fire, and the town has carried his name ever since. The near-square castle still stands with its five towers, battlements and walls.
