The earliest evidence for Kayseri Castle appears on coins from the reign of the Roman emperor Gordian III, in the 3rd century. Repaired over the Roman, Byzantine, Danishmendid, Seljuk, Karamanid and Ottoman periods, a substantial part of its inner walls survives today. It stands right next to Cumhuriyet Square.
