Pütürge, 74 km from Malatya's provincial centre, is a rugged district set in the valley of the Şiro Stream and the surrounding mountains. Formerly known as İmrun (Mürün), the settlement was founded as a village about 300 years ago, became a sub-district in 1877 and a district in 1892, and was attached to Malatya after the founding of the Republic. Part of the eastern slopes of the famous Mount Nemrut lies within the district's boundaries; the Perieş Castle, dated to AD 450, in the village of Uzuntaş, and Kerar Castle are among its historic structures.
