Built in the names of Mor Behnam and his sister Saro, and also known today as the Church of the Forty (Kırklar), the building dates to the mid-6th century. In 1293 it became the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate in Mardin, and the community's religious affairs were run from here for a long period. A school opened in its courtyard in 1799 and operated until 1928.
