Kaymaklı Underground City

Located in Kaymaklı township, 20 kilometres from Nevşehir, the underground city's first level was cut in the Hittite period and was later expanded during the Roman and Byzantine periods into an eight-level complex. Rooms and halls carved into the tuff and linked by narrow corridors include wine and water stores, kitchens, food stores, ventilation shafts and a church; large disc-shaped stones that could be rolled shut from inside to block the doors against outside danger are a notable feature. Opened to visitors in 1964, four of its levels can be visited today.
