Akkuş, in interior Ordu, is a high-altitude district in the Canik Mountains; formerly called Karakuş, it took the name Akkuş in 1954. It lies under snow for 4-5 months a year; hazelnut and corn farming, forestry and handwoven carpet weaving are its livelihoods.
