Gürgentepe, on a high plateau where the Canik and Giresun mountain ranges meet, became a district in 1987; a significant part of its population is Çepni Turkish. The Gürgentepe çakıldak hazelnut and Gürgentepe çoban bean, both with a geographical indication, are its well-known products.
