Karatepe is a Late Hittite fortress from the 8th century BC. The reliefs at its gates and the bilingual inscriptions in Phoenician and Luwian hieroglyphs played a key role in deciphering Luwian hieroglyphs. The fortress sits in a forested national park overlooking the Aslantaş Dam lake. Visiting conditions may have changed since the 2023 earthquakes; check before you go.
