Pamukova lies in a plain east of Sakarya, through which the Sakarya River runs; it is bounded by the Taraklı-Karagöl plateau to the south and the Samanlı Mountains to the north. Known in antiquity as Tataion and in the Ottoman period as Akhisar, the area has prehistoric mounds and became a district in 1987.
