Akıncılar lies in north-eastern Sivas, in the upper Kelkit Valley, bordering Giresun's Şebinkarahisar district. It became a district in 1990 after separating from Suşehri; its culture leans more towards the Black Sea than inland Sivas, and the kemençe and horon dances are still played here.
