Niksar Castle was founded as Kabeira in the Kingdom of Pontus and was expanded with structures added during the Roman period. Taken by the Turks in the 11th century, it was conquered by Danişment Gazi, founder of the Danishmend beylik, and made the beylik's capital. Made up of inner, middle and outer wall lines, the castle contains the remains of baths, mosques, a madrasa, a church and a prison.
