Sebastopolis is a city built on a mound now lying beneath the centre of Sulusaray, with a history going back to the Early Bronze Age. Originally called Herakleopolis, it became known as Sebastopolis from the early 2nd century CE and was attached to the province of Cappadocia under Emperor Trajan. Excavations in 1987-1990 and in 2010 showed the city was an important settlement in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
