Trabzon Castle runs from the shore to the hills behind the city. The earliest section of its walls dates to the Roman period, the 4th century BCE, and it was rebuilt under Emperor Justinian I (527-565). Taking on the character of a walled capital under the Komnenos dynasty, the castle is made up of three sections: the upper, middle and lower fortresses.
