Van Museum grew out of a storage building set up in 1932 into its present form, and its new 13,000-square-metre building opened to visitors in 2019. Its 23 exhibition halls hold Urartian cuneiform stelae, ram-shaped Akkoyunlu and Karakoyunlu gravestones, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman artefacts, and ethnographic pieces reflecting Van's folk culture. The museum stands by the lake shore near Van Castle.
