Özalp lies between Van's city centre and Saray district; Lake Akgöl, near the border with Gürpınar, is within the district. The district centre was founded in 1869 as Mahmudiye in what is now Saray district, before moving to its present site in 1948. The Van-Sufiyan railway passes through the district; small livestock farming is widespread, and Özalp's herbed cheese is one of Van's three best-selling cheese varieties.
