Built in 1779 by Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey, governor of the Bozok sanjak, the mosque is known locally as the Great Mosque. The outer section of the cut-stone building was added in 1794 by his brother Süleyman Bey. Its interior decoration makes it an important example of Turkish Baroque in Anatolia, and the tomb of the Çapanoğlu family stands on its eastern side.
