Founded in the 13th century by the Turkish mystic Hacı Bektaş Veli, the complex is laid out around three courtyards, in the manner of old Turkish palaces. After the closure of dervish lodges in 1925 it was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations and opened as the Hacı Bektaş Veli Museum in 1964. Regarded as the centre where the Bektashi teaching originated and spread, the tomb was nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
